Levi Strauss clothing company financially supports gun control organizations

Clothing Company Levi Strauss recently jumped into an anti-gun position by financially supporting “gun violence” prevention. In the next four years, Levi Strauss is committing to donate up to a million dollars to fund anti-gun organizations, Live Free and Everytown for Gun Safety. They are also jump starting a new chapter called, “Everytown Business Leaders for Gun Safety.” The goal of the new chapter is to recruit other business leaders to donate funds to change the gun culture in the United States.

CEO Chip Bergh said, “As business leaders with power in the public and political arenas, we simply cannot stand by silently when it comes to the issues that threaten the very fabric of the communities where we live and work.” To further demonstrate their commitment to anti-gun measures, Levi Strauss committed to match the funds donated by their employees along with paying up to five hours per month of volunteer work in the efforts to increase gun control regulations. The company has received praise from Americans who agree with these measures along with calls for boycotts from the NRA and other gun rights organizations.

It is my opinion, this position will financially hurt Levi Strauss in the long run. Thousands of their lifelong loyal customers are pro-gun, freedom-loving Americans do not take kindly to companies who support policies that restrict their protected Second Amendment Rights. In an effort to protect the safety of the American people, their misguided approach of banning certain firearms and restricting law-abiding citizens from owning them has historically been proven to fail. The simple fact that criminals do not comply with any restrictions imposed will certainly not increase the safety of the American people. How some people do not get that point baffles me.

A clothing company jumping into the gun rights battle and aligning themselves with organizations that lack evidence for their cause not only alienates a large portion of their customer base but angers Americans who feel that big government has no business interfering with individuals deciding how to protect themselves. There is no mention of ideas to increase security or even appreciate the value that law-abiding gun owners in America help to prevent crime. These gun-control organizations primarily focus on restricting the law-abiding people who value safety, which in reality, is an asset to their communities.
